Turning the Devil's Stone
- Turning the Devil's Stone
Just outside the churchyard in Shebbear, Devon, lies a large stone, which was apparently accidentally dropped by Satan, or perhaps brought deliberately from nearby Henscott to stop them using it as a foundation for a new church. Every year, on the evening of *November the Fifth, the bell-ringers sound a jangled peal on the church bells and then proceed to turn the Devil's Boulder over, with crowbars. It would be unlucky not to do so. Hole, 1975:101; Shuel, 1985: 17, 19; Kightly, 1986: 222.
